Breckland site with unique meres

East Wretham is part of the largest remaining block of open Breckland heath, its western margin joining with the Stanford Army Training Area. It is also famous for its meres, small lakes which undergo large fluctuations in water level as they are fed from ground water in the chalk below. These attract wildfowl when full and passage waders when muddy edges are exposed. The breckland habitat attracts Nightjar, Woodlark and Redstart if you’re lucky.
